Developing Competency - in the best interest of children A network project between Western Balkan children's homes and the University of Agder, Norway, grounded upon the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In August 2010 the University of Agder fikk was awarded the financial resources necessary to fund a three-year competency-raising project in the western Balkans. These funds were provided by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under a program entitled, ”Peace, Reconciliation and Democracy in the Western Balkans”. The project aims to contribute to the establishment of a network between children’s homes and raising staff competency levels in order to provide high-quality child care. Work is being completed to achieve these goals through organizational and sustainable staff development. The project management team in Norway consists of the following individuals: Senior Lecturer Anne Tove Fennefoss and Senior Lecturer Kirsten E. Jansen from the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UiA. Additionally, Professor Berit Bae of Oslo University College is acting as advisor to the project management. Project manager and coordinator in the Balkan is the Director Zoran Milacic, Beograd/ Serbia.

More information regarding the project may be found on the following webpage: www.uia.no/balkan

The project is based on/a continuation of experiences acquired during a competency-raising project in Bijela, Montenegro, which began in 2008.
